Conduct
- Students are expected to behave in a safe and responsible manner when not at practice.
- Alcohol, drugs and other law breaking behaviors are possible grounds for dismissal from team. A athlete/coach/parent meeting will be required to assess any such situation.
Multiple Sports/Activities
We respect that some athletes have commitments to other sports and activities outside of cross country. If this is the case, it is imperative that you communicate what days you will and will not be able to attend practice. Athletes participating in another sport are also expected to communicate about their health and additional workouts to prevent injury and overuse.
We believe that high school athletes are capable of being accountable for their actions and are able to hold themselves to a high standard of behavior. These expectations are written with the conviction that you are capable of far more than these expectations.
General Guidelines:
- All parents and student athletes are required to follow and abide by the rules in the athletic handbook.
- Sportsmanship is a major concern of the CVHS athletic program and CV XC. The team will maintain a positive atmosphere among team members. Parents will support their athletes and other team members in the same positive manner. Our parents are the teams’ #1 FAN!
- If a parent has a concern, the parent should talk with their child first to see if the student athlete can answer the question. If needed, the parent will contact the coaching staff to set up an appointment to meet in person with the coaching staff and their child.
- No meeting will be given without the Student Athlete present.
- These meetings must be made 24 hours in advance.
- Practices after school, Monday-Friday will be from 3:15-5:15pm.
- Saturday practice is from 7:00-9:15am.
- Student athletes need to be on time and ready for practice to begin at 3:15. Detention will be seen as an unexcused absence.
- Student athletes are REQUIRED to inform their attendance coach, 24 hours prior to the absence, through a Remind message, in the event that they need to miss a practice. Any absence not communicated through Remind will be considered unexcused. The first unexcused absence will result in a warning. A second unexcused absence will result in the student athlete being withheld from the next upcoming meet based on their current team level (i.e. Varsity, JV, Open) Injured athletes are still required to attend practice and COMPLETE their rehab program with the training staff.
- If a student athlete misses a practice, they will schedule a time to make up the practice.
- If a student athlete is struggling in a class, they can schedule to meet with the teacher after school only after they have let the head coaches know. Failure to do this will result in an unexcused absence.
- Examples of Excused Absences:
- Doctor’s Appointments (Doctor’s note required), Family Emergencies, School Tests (ACT/SAT), Make up Class Tests, Senior College Visits (4 missed days total)
- Examples of Unexcused Absences
- Outside Jobs (athletes are responsible for arranging their schedule around practice times), Family Vacations, Other School Clubs, Babysitting
- Truancies or unexcused absences from school
- District policy dictates one F places the student athlete on Academic Warning; two F’s make the student athlete academically ineligible for the week.
- Grade report is run Thursday evening and coaches are informed of any ineligible athletes on Friday. The athlete will be ineligible starting the following Monday until the end of that week (Monday-Saturday).
Meets:
- The coaching staff decides which student athletes are competing at which level meets (Varsity, JV, Open).
- Three criteria are used to determine which level (Varsity, JV, Open) an athlete will compete at each week:
- Athlete’s finishing place (both in the meet and within the team) and time at previous meets.
- Athlete’s effort and attitude at practice.
- Other factors such as academic ineligibility, team disciplinary measures, level of competition at the meet, etc.
- Three criteria are used to determine which level (Varsity, JV, Open) an athlete will compete at each week:
- Student athletes should be prepared for all different kinds of weather at both practice and meets. Missing a practice due to inadequate dress or lacking proper equipment will be treated as an unexcused absence.
- Student athletes are required to sign a Uniform Contract before any uniform is issued. If the uniform/sweats are damaged, fees will be assessed through the school as follows:
- Singlet/Short Combination - $110.00
- Warm-up Jacket - $50
- Warm-up Pants - $50
- Athletes are expected to wear CVHS XC apparel at meets or athletic apparel that is either Red, White or Black (wearing an apparel item with another school on it does not show solidarity with your teammates).
There are three ways that a student athlete can earn a Varsity Letter for the CVHS XC team:
- If an athlete qualifies for the State Track and Field meet as an individual or as a member of the team.
- If an athlete is selected for the Regional meet (9 racers and 1 alternate per gender)
- The coaching staff reserves the right to award a Varsity Letter to an athlete who: demonstrates exemplary dedication to the team; suffers a season ending injury; seniors who demonstrated exceptional commitment and dedication to the program; any additional, unforeseen circumstance.
***In addition ALL athletes must complete the season in good standing with the team to be considered for a Varsity letter.***
- The coaching staff reserves the right to determine what “good standing” means.
