Open: Unfortunately, our Open race was cancelled. As such, your season has concluded as we are not allowed to compete in any races outside of the Regional meet next week. What's next? At the conclusion of the JV league champs, all JV/ Open athlete's seasons will be over. This is the last for JV/ Open runners anyways, but due to practice size limitations, we can not allow non-varsity athletes to continue practicing. You will be notified by the coaches if you are a part of the team expected to continue practicing through 10/17 as a part of our varsity squad. Training and Other Racing Opportunities: For anyone who wants to continue training, Coach Lyons and Coach Marshall will continue to post training on the blog. There will be an opportunity to run a flat, fast 5k on November 6th in Colorado Springs, that we plan on running as a club team. This will be a great chance to try and PR at the end of a long season (much in the way that the NXR meet in Phoenix normally is.) There may be another event or two that pops up as a part of the "post-season", and anyone who continues the training on their own is welcome to race with us in those events. If you are interested in continuing, please reach out to one of the coaches and we will include you in the groups. Varsity athletes who are currently quarantining will be expected to continue the training on their own, as they may still be eligible to race at the Regional or State Championships. Another week in the books! Here's a quick recap of this week of racing, info on the remainder of the season, and a look ahead for the next week: Thursday's race at Ponderosa was highlighted by an individual win on the boy's side by freshman Matthew Higgs. Matthew powered over a hilly and sandy course for the first victory of his young career. The rest of the boy's top 5 was rounded out by Jacob Nicholas, Christian Alley. Tyler Arbogast, and Will Merenda, and placed first overall in team scoring. The girls finished 3rd as a team, and were led by Donni Cauble's top 10 finish. On Friday, we sent runners to Casey Jones park in Elizabeth to face off against Chaparral and Douglas County HS. The girls won the meet, and Kseniya Nikanorov and Sophie Schwartz worked together to push the pace for a majority of the race, before Kseniya broke away in the final mile to win. The boys battled close with Chaparral before ultimately finishing 2nd, led by strong races from Jayden Royer (2nd overall) and Holden Ripp (5th). At Rock Canyon, on Saturday morning, the varsity teams squared off against some of the top ranked teams in the state. The boys finished a close 4th overall, and were led by the trio of Will Merrick (3rd), Hal Fotinos (4th), and Connor Baty (7th). The girls finished 5th, edging out Thunder Ridge in a tie-breaker. Alana Mann was our top finisher in 18th overall, followed closely by Brenna Wendell (21st), Mari Boekes, (24) and Sam North (25th). What an incredible two days of racing for Sabercat XC. On Friday we hosted a JV invitational which included two separate courses. On course A, the gentleman set the tone for the day taking the first 7 spots! Sophomore TJ Frueh got the first “W” of his high school career, closely followed by Cody Z., Alec R., Conner Withers, Johnny R., Graham S., and Lukas H to complete the 1-7 sweep. Down on the Plume Creek Trail (the B course for the day), Junior Sam Travis took the win in a hard fought solo effort. The lady’s race was dominated up front by CV XC athletes as well. Freshman Sage Berquist got her first win of her career. Her teammates backed her up by putting 6 in the top 10 (Reese P. – 3rd, Kseniya N. – 4th, Caitlyn D. – 5th, Maddie R. – 6th, and Sophie S. – 9th). On Saturday, the varsity traveled down to Colorado Springs for the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede Pre-State meet. The boys raced first, notched a crucial victory against a regional rival, and took home some hardware with their 2nd place finish. The boys were led by Will Merrick in 4th and backed up by Connor B. in 6th, Hal F. in 7th, Kellen S. in 18th, Holden Ripp in 25th, and Jayden Royer in 44th. The lady’s raced very well, finishing 6th overall behind some of the best teams in the state. The girls were led by Sophomore Mari Boekes in 21st, and backed up by Alana M. in 29th, Sam N., in 30th, Viv M. in 34th, and Brenna W. in 38th. All season our strength has been in a tight team packs, and I think we showcased this advantage on a state-wide stage this weekend. You can NOT leave the meet before finishing your entire cool-down without approval from Coach Marshall or Coach Lyons. Also, we are still waiting on spectator information for all of the meets this week, but we do know that at Rock Canyon masked family members will be allowed in attendance. Snap-Raise We have 5 days remaining in the campaign! Thank you very much to everyone who has participated in the fundraiser, your help will go a long way to getting new uniforms and warm-ups for the entire team as well as one of our great assistant coaches. We have raised an impressive $6,600 so far. To get the uniforms, warm-ups and pay for a great assistant coach that our dedicated athletes deserve, Coach Marshall and I believe we will need $10,000. I have the utmost confidence that in the final days of the campaign that we can achieve our goals.
